To neutralize, the trader should use the delta ratio: 0.58 / 0.42 ≈ 1.38. This means buying 1 call for every 0.72 puts (or, scaling up, buying 5 calls and buying 7 puts). Now the long-side deltas are 5 × 0.58 = 2.9, and the short-side (put) deltas sum to 7 × 0.42 = 2.94 — nearly identical. The position has true two-way exposure.

Total outlay: (5 × 340) + (7 × 320) = 1,700 + 2,240 = ₹3,940. The position now profits if FINNIFTY moves enough in either direction to justify the ₹3,940 premium paid, and it is indifferent to small, sideways price moves.

Ratio Spreads: A More Sophisticated Delta-Neutral Play

Delta neutrality also enables ratio spreads, where you buy and sell different strikes to exploit mispricings rather than betting on movement magnitude.

The trader is betting on relative value convergence, not direction.

This is the hidden power of delta-neutral strategies: they let you isolate and trade mispricings without bearing naked directional risk. But they require rigorous setup and active watching.

The Neutrality Illusion: A Hard Lesson

Many new traders make a critical error: they assume that because a position is delta-neutral, they can sit back and let it print money. This is false.

Consider a trader who shorts a naked straddle (selling a call and a put at the same strike) when the underlying is just below the strike, resulting in delta-neutral SPLs on paper. The trader tells themselves, “I have no directional exposure; the position will profit from time decay and volatility contraction.” Then the market gaps overnight — not an uncommon event — and the underlying surges 8% in a few hours. The short call’s delta explodes toward 1.0, while the short put’s delta bottoms near zero. The position is now massively short gamma: any further move hurts you exponentially. Gamma: The Hidden Risk in Delta-Neutral Positions

Delta-neutral does not mean risk-free. The real danger lies in gamma — the rate at which delta itself changes.

A long straddle (long both call and put) is delta-neutral at the strike but has positive gamma: as the underlying moves away from the strike, both the call and put’s deltas shift further away from zero, amplifying the gains. A 3% move becomes a 6% P&L move due to gamma acceleration. Long gamma is the friend of big-move traders.

A short straddle is delta-neutral at the strike but has negative gamma: any move away from the strike erodes your delta neutrality, and the further it moves, the worse it gets. As a delta-neutral position ages toward expiration, the trader must telescope the action points inward. Early in the trade, you might accept a rebalancing band of ±0.25 delta. As expiration nears and time decay accelerates, you might tighten that band to ±0.15, then ±0.10. This constant micro-adjustment locks in profit while you still have room to move without prohibitive transaction costs.
